Sportsman Channel, Safari Club Feed Homeless At Grand Central

Venison Stew On Menu For Less Fortunate As Part Of "Hunt. Fish. Feed." Outreach

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 12/11/2008 11:33:00 PM MT

The Sportsman Channel and the Safari Club International Foundation’s Sportsmen Against Hunger will feed the less fortunate in Manhattan this Saturday.

Local hunters from the New York state area will donate game to provide a home-cooked meal of venison chili to many of Manhattan’s homeless and poverty-stricken individuals at the Grand Central Neighborhood Drop-In Center in New York on Dec. 13 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The effort is part of "The Hunt.Fish.Feed." initiative, an outreach program that taps a new food source with high nutritional value for the homeless, made possible by responsible outdoorsmen to whom hunting is synonymous with harvesting. In New York City, over 48,000 individuals are homeless, accounting for 78% of the homeless population in the state. Of these individuals, 59% are homeless families. Meanwhile, overpopulation of deer is responsible for approximately $250 million dollars a year in crop and vehicle damages in New York alone.

“We are pleased to continue our partnership with Safari Club International Foundation’s Sportsmen Against Hunger and bring the Hunt.Fish.Feed. initiative to Grand Central Neighborhood,” said Mark Kang, vice president of affiliate relations for The Sportsman Channel, in a statement. “In a time when we are facing such economic turmoil, we are utilizing the essential food sources that are readily available to us, which responsible sportsmen have been doing for years and we hope to bring recognition to.”
