AT&T Completes Acquisition Of Wi-Fi Provider Wayport

Deal Adds More Than 10,000 Hot Spots to Telco's Network

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 12/12/2008 8:02:00 AM EST

AT&T announced Friday that it closed the acquisition of Wayport, a provider of more than 10,000 Wi-Fi wireless hot spots in the U.S., for about $275 million in cash.

The Wayport deal, announced last month, gives AT&T nearly 20,000 domestic hot spots. Globally, AT&T operates nearly 80,000 Wi-Fi hot spots, including roaming locations.

The telco provides free access to its Wi-Fi network to AT&T DSL subscribers, touting in its marketing literature, “Cable can't provide that.” AT&T also sells standalone Wi-Fi plans starting at $9.99 per month.

AT&T also said it is nearing completion of the transition of nearly 7,000 Starbucks-owned stores in the United States to AT&T Wi-Fi service.
