New Retrans Deal Led to Young’s Return to Dish

Stations in 11 Markets Return to DBS Provider's Lineup

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 12/15/2008 11:16:00 AM

Young Broadcasting’s 10 TV stations went back on Dish Network this weekend after both parties reached a new retransmission-consent deal, the broadcaster said Monday.

“We have an agreement that we’re satisfied with, and they’re apparently satisfied with, so we’re going forward,” said James Morgan, Young Broadcasting’s chief financial officer.

He declined to comment on the terms of the new contract, or whether Young Broadcasting got the one penny, per day, per subscriber in license fees it was seeking for its stations from Dish Network. Officials at the direct-broadcast satellite provider couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.

Young Broadcasting stations, including KRON-TV in San Francisco, were restored by Dish Network in 11 markets about 5 p.m. ET Sunday. That was roughly three days after Dish had dropped the signals on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET, a day after its old retransmission-consent contract with the broadcaster expired.

Dish Network and Young Broadcasting officials negotiated over the weekend, according to Morgan.

In addition to KRON, Young Broadcasting owns WLNS-TV in Lansing, Mich., WKRN-TV Nashville, Tenn., WTEN-TV in Albany, N.Y., WRIC-TV in Richmond, Va., WATE-TV in Knoxville, Tenn., WBAY-TV in Green Bay, Wis., KLFY-TV in Lafayette, La., KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, S.D., and KWQC-TV in Davenport, Iowa.

Last week, Dish Network charged that Young Broadcasting was seeking unreasonable rate increases that it would be forced to pass onto its subscribers, if it agreed to pay such price hikes.

Young, in turn, argued that its popular programming was worth a penny a day and that Dish Network paid more for less popular cable networks.
