Comcast SportsNet Notches Best-Ever Ratings With Streaking Celtics

Boston-Atlanta Game Delivers 7.5 Household Average

By Multichannel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 12/23/2008 5:31:00 PM

As the Boston Celtics look to set a record for the best start in NBA history tonight against the Philadelphia 76ers, Comcast SportsNet New England dunked its best ever mark with its presentation of the club’s game last Friday night.

The Dec. 19 game against the Atlanta Hawks, which was televised nationally by ESPN, averaged a 7.5 household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research data, translating into some 270,000 homes in New England.

CSN New England’s Celtics-Bulls household rating peaked at a 10.2 on Dec. 19, reaching some 368,000 homes in New England.  The regional sports network's previous regular season record of 6.8 was set earlier this year when the Celtics defeated the Atlanta Hawks on Nov 12.

In the process, CSN New England’s Celtics telecast ranked first or second in seven different demos in the Boston DMA on Dec. 19: No. 1 with males 18 to 34, 18 to 49, 25 to 54; first with adults 18 to 49 and 25 to 54; and second among adults 18 to 34 and women 18 to 49.

“We are delighted that our Celtics games have become a top draw with both male and female viewers, said Bill Bridgen, Comcast SportsNet executive vice president and general manager, in a statement. “Being number one or two with adults demonstrates that the Celtics are reaching a larger audience than ever before,”

On Dec. 23 against the Comcast-owned Sixers, the Celts will look to win their franchise-best 19th consecutive contest and earn the best start in NBA history at 27-2. Should they win tonight, Boston would wipe the 1966-67 76ers and the 1969-70 New York Knicks from league annals.
