Selig Sets Up MLB Network Bow

Commissioner Will Address Audience As Service Throws Out First Pitch

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 1/1/2009 8:40:00 AM

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig had the first word when MLB Network launched Jan.1 at 6 p.m. (ET). Selig welcomed fans with remarks about the “common bonds” the game creates across the years and generations and how it has “a special place” in the fabric of American culture. The commissioner also talked about how MLB Network is a new way for fans to enjoy the sport through “in-depth analysis, live games, unique programming and unprecedented access to Major League Baseball.” He also noted that in conjunction with Major League Baseball Productions, the network --the

largest launch in cable history

with some 50 million homes -- has more than 150,000 hours of archival footage. After Selig’s address, MLB Network preceded the Hot Stove Report, leading into a replay of

Don Larsen’s 1956 World Series perfect game

versus the Brooklyn Dodgers, the only no-hitter in the sport’s post-season history.
