Los Angeles—Actor Kevin Bacon Friday said that his new HBO movie, Taking Chances, will help drive home the meaning of casualties of war, no matter how you feel about the conflict.

“In its simplicity, it becomes a profound comment,” Bacon said during HBO’s session on Taking Chances at the Television Critics Association press tour.

Bacon is starring in the telepic, which is based on the first-person narrative of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, a U.S. Marine who volunteered to escort the body of 19-year-old Lance Corporal Chance Phelps, who was killed in Iraq, across America to his hometown in Wyoming.

“It’s incredibly accurate,” Bacon said.

Taking Chances , which premieres Feb. 21, documents the little-known process of the Marines offering an escort to accompany—with careful ceremony and respect—the bodies of soldiers killed in combat back to their families.

“It really does hit home when you see what happens to the actual remains,” Bacon said.

Strobl was also on the panel, recalling the kindnesses of the people he came across on his journey, like the flight attendant who handed him a crucifix and construction workers taking off their hard hats.
