The announcement is expected to come as soon as Tuesday Jan. 13. Genachowski had been considered a front-runner for the position.

Julius GenachowskiHow quickly Genachowski would be installed to head the agency is unclear, but broadband deployment was a key campaign issue for the president-elect, who also opposes the Feb. 17 DTV transition deadline, which has become a political football.

A veteran of technology policy, whose career includes a stint as chief counsel for former FCC chairman Reed Hundt, Genachowski has been serving as Obama's chief technology counsel.

A classmate of Obama’s at Harvard Law School, Genachowski was credited with directing the president-elect’s online campaign strategy in the win over Sen. John McCain (R.-Ariz.).

He is co-founder of venture capital firm Rock Creek Ventures, who also has experience on the private side, working for nine years Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActive Corp. through 2005.
