By Multichannel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 1/12/2009 5:04:00 PM

President-elect Barack Obama is expected to name Julius Genachowski to succeed Kevin Martin as the Federal Communications Commission chairman, according to published reports.

The announcement is expected to come as soon as Tuesday Jan. 13. Genachowski had been considered a front-runner for the position.

Julius GenachowskiHow quickly Genachowski would be installed to head the agency is unclear, but broadband deployment was a key campaign issue for the president-elect, who also opposes the Feb. 17 DTV transition deadline, which has become a political football.

A veteran of technology policy, whose career includes a stint as chief counsel for former FCC chairman Reed Hundt, Genachowski has been serving as Obama's chief technology counsel.

A classmate of Obama’s at Harvard Law School, Genachowski was credited with directing the president-elect’s online campaign strategy in the win over Sen. John McCain (R.-Ariz.).

He is co-founder of venture capital firm Rock Creek Ventures, who also has experience on the private side, working for nine years Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActive Corp. through 2005.
