WGN America Adds ‘The Next Generation’ To Lineup

Award-Winning Sci Fi Favorite Makes Debuts Jan. 20

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 1/15/2009 4:58:00 AM

Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 20, just as America gets a new President, WGN America makes a new addition to its roster: Star Trek: The Next Generation, officials said Thursday.

A triple run of Star Trek: The Next Generation will air every Tuesday night from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., with an additional episode airing at 1 a.m. A fifth episode of StarTrek: The Next Generation will also air on Saturdays at noon.

Created by Gene Roddenberry and set in the 24th century, Star Trek: The Next Generation is the successor to the original Star Trek, and WGN America has acquired all 178 60-minute episodes from the show’s seven seasons.

Star Trek” The Next Generation has an extremely successful track record and has proven to be popular with all audiences,” Ed Wilson, Tribune Co.’s Chief Revenue Officer and Tribune Broadcasting President, said in a prepared statement. “The addition of the Emmy-award winning series will anchor WGN America’s Tuesday night lineup, and we will continue to add compelling content to our schedule.”

The winner of 18 primetime Emmy Awards and named “Best Sci-Fi Show” by TV Guide in 1993,  Star Trek: The Next Generation stars Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, Jonathan Frakes as Capt. William Riker, LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, Wil Wheaton as Ensign Wesley Crusher and Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan and features the voyages of the starship Enterprise through space, the final frontier.
