Showtime has renewed its freshman original series The United States Of Tara for a second season, according to Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt.
The Steven Spielberg-produced series, starring Toni Collette as a suburban mother with multiple personalities, will begin production on 12 new episodes this summer that will air in early 2010.
Through four episodes of its freshman season, the show averaged 2.1 million viewers including on-air original and repeat telecasts, according to Showtime.
The Jan. 18 series premiere of United States of Tara drew 881,000 viewers in its debut airing and 2.67 million subscribers over subsequent runs, making it the network's largest since 2004, outperforming Showtime's other original Weeds, Californication, Dexter and The Tudors in their premiere weeks.
"It has been pure pleasure working with Diablo Cody, Toni Collette, Steven Spielberg and everyone at Dreamworks on United States of Tara," Greenblatt said in a statement. "This show is a perfect fit for our premium brand and we're thrilled that critics and audiences have responded to this groundbreaking show so well. I look forward to many more alternate personalities."
