Boosted by new original series Aaron Stone, Disney XD got off to a strong start Friday, said network officials.
With an eye toward reaching boys and male tweens, Disney XD replaced Toon Disney on Feb. 13 and delivered 6.5 million unduplicated viewers, including 2.6 million kids 6 to 14 during its coming out party, according to Nielsen Media Research data.
Aaron Stone, the first original series on the newly branded channel, averaged 303,000 kids 6-to-14 watchers, with 232,000 boys of that age in tow at 7 p.m. That performance surpassed all series premieres on Toon Disney, according to XD executives.
Unveiled with back-to-back original episodes in the 7 p.m hour., Aaron Stone, about a teenager enlisted to become the real life version of a legendary, crime fighting online game character, averaged 286,000 kids 6 to 14 and 224,000 boys 6 to 14, results that topped prior-year time periods by 208% and 266%, respectively. Among total viewers, Aaron Stone almost doubled year-ago levels among total viewers: averaging 549,000 for the hour, versus 279,000.
In a synergistic move, Aaron Stone's premiere on Disney Channel, averaged 1.6 million viewers and 892,000 kids 6 to14.
Disney XD's first day was also highlighted by sneak previews of upcoming series Jimmy Two Shoes and Kid vs. Kat.
