Siriusly, Things Don’t Look So Bleak
(RE: “Is Dish’s Ergen Sirius,” Multichannel.com, Feb. 16) “The fall of Sirius?” You have got to be joking. Sirius XM has met, and continues to meet all of their growth projections, even in this economy and the down auto market. They are now the second-largest subscriber based service (20 million and growing) in the country. There is good reason for this … just ask any subscriber. They are fighting over this company now because there is great value owning it, and for no other reason.

Fairness on Cable: A Private Matter
(RE: “ 'Hate Speech’ on Cable?”, Multichannel.com, Feb. 12): A few problems with the story — the primary one being a discussion of Fairness Doctrine associated with a story about cable news programming. This is a vital concern and one that badly needs pointing out; and the Fairness Doctrine is desperately needed. However, the two are unrelated. Fairness applies only to over-the-air broadcasts; cable will be completely unaffected. The reason being that there’s a far greater level of government oversight appropriate on the airwaves, which belong to the people, than privately owned cable channels which people can choose to bring into their homes and which are, at least in theory, unlimited.
Fairness will, however, address the even greater problem of hate speech in right-wing talk radio. If these guys think CNN and the like are a problem in discussion of immigration, they’re nothing compared to Rush Limbaugh and Mike Savage, along with many local talk-radio hosts who demonize Hispanics constantly while claiming to only target “illegal aliens,” frequently using bogus stats from hate groups like FAIR. There’s a massive problem here, and the mainstream media continues to ignore it, the another reason Fairness Doctrine is desperately needed, a side of American political discussion is entirely left out of the discussion.
