NBC Universal signed a deal to use Rentrak's newly launched Digital Download Essentials service, which will track and report on NBCU's TV content purchased by consumers and downloaded via the Internet.
Rentrak said NBCU, among other studios and networks, has been testing out the Digital Download Essentials. The service collects anonymous data as part of tracking and auditing NBCU's electronic sell-through and rental business through multiple licensees.
"The Digital Download Essentials service gives NBC Universal access to valuable reporting about what television content our customers are purchasing via the Internet," said Michael Bonner, senior vice president of NBC Universal Digital Distribution. "With the addition of this service, we have the data needed to make strategic business choices across multiple platforms."
Rentrak provides research for other NBCU business units including theatrical distribution, home entertainment, on-demand television content and mobile content.
