Presumably with more than a few wanting to check out controversial slugger Alex Rodriguez, a record number of fans tuned in YES Network's spring training telecast Thursday.
The regional sports network scored a 1.19 household rating in the New York DMA on Feb. 26 with its coverage of the New York Yankees-Tampa Bay Rays game at 1 p.m. The contest -- in which the Yanks beat the defending American League champions 5-1 and Rodriguez, who admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs when he was with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03, went 0-2 -- topped YES's previous high spring training telecast, the Bronx Bombers' exhibition against Virginia Tech on March 18, 2008.
That game, which garnered a 1.17 rating and 86,000 households, was played to commemorate the tragic shooting that took place on the college's campus the year before.
