Comcast Goes 'Wideband' In Bay Area

Operator To Initially Offer DOCSIS 3.0 Service In Silicon Valley, Tri-Valley,  Monterey

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 3/3/2009 3:55:48 PM

Comcast is now offering DOCSIS 3.0 service, with download speeds up to 50 Mbps, to subscribers in the San Francisco area.

The rollout is part of the operator's plan to deploying DOCSIS 3.0 to more than 65% of its footprint this year to reach a target of more than 30 million premises.

As in other markets, Comcast is offering two higher-speed tiers: Extreme 50, up to 50 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 10 Mbps of upstream speed at $139.95 per month; and Ultra, offering up to 22 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 5 Mbps of upstream speed at $62.95 per month. Pricing is for subscribers that also have Comcast cable TV.

With the DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade, Comcast also will double speeds for most existing high-speed Internet customers at no additional cost. For example, Performance Plus customers will be upgraded to Comcast's Blast! tier, which will double their download speeds to up to 16 Mbps and provide up to 2 Mbps of upload speed.

Starting March 3, Comcast's new services will be available to residential homes in the San Jose-Silicon Valley area, portions of the East Bay and the Monterey-Salinas area. The MSO will make the services available to businesses beginning March 10, and then expand the availability of the faster speeds to other portions of the Bay Area later in 2009.
