Comcast announced it has completed the upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0 in its New Castle, Del., system, doubling Internet speeds for more customers at no additional cost and allowing the MSO to offer premium-speed tiers of up to 50 Mbps downstream.
Comcast's goal is to deploy DOCSIS 3.0 to more than 65% of its footprint this year, serving more than 30 million premises. Also this week the operator said it has begun offering "wideband" DOCSIS 3.0 service in the San Francisco area.
So far in Comcast's "Freedom Region," which covers greater Philadelphia, New Jersey and northern Delaware, the operator has upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 in 11 systems: In Philadelphia's Bucks County, Chester County, Lower Merion, Willow Grove; New Jersey's Central N.J., Cherry Hill, Meadowlands, Monmouth County, Plainfield, Union; and New Castle, Del.
