The Evolution Will Continue
(RE: “Cable Chiefs: Keep Your Heads Up,” Multichannel.com, March 5) Digital enabled the rapid expansion of new channels that filled segments / categories that were untapped (lifestyle — Food Network, HGTV, Speed; expansion of Discovery Networks; regional, college and extreme sports, etc.). Plus, distributors were motivated to add channels by the fact they could rationalize rates increases with new and exciting content. Now, the rapid growth of new platforms — Mobile, (iPhone), Online (You Tube, Netflix, Hulu, soon to be launched Vevo: Universal Music & You Tube — and the increased ability to access content in real-time or on-demand on any device provides a new growth opportunity for content companies. The business models will evolve. Business Intelligence will be more important than ever providing an ability to monetize their investment and demonstrate an ROI for advertisers. Consumers are now King and benefit from this ever changing marketplace.

Life Beyond Broadband’s Reach
(RE: “Making the Case for Rural Broadband Bucks,” ) We live in an area not served by cable or DSL. The only option for anything faster than 9,600 baud is two-way satellite internet. Promises of DSL have been made to this area for the past five years. We are allegedly 1,000 feet beyond the DSL boundary. … Finally, now Verizon doesn’t even show our number as a customer. None of my neighbors are shown as customers either. In other words, they really don’t have a clue as to what they are doing. Their engineering department ran 'DSL’ service to an area serving about 5 houses, and because they didn’t know where the LATA boundary is, ignored about 50 customers exactly 180 degrees away from where they laid their cable. At least 10 of my neighbors have requested this broadband service, including two business users. I ended up getting cable internet installed at a friends house in order to be able to do my work.
