Comcast, Sony To Open Showcase Store In Philly

Retail Outlet In MSO's Headquarters to Feature 'Wideband,' Tru2way HDTVs

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 3/16/2009 1:01:00 AM

Comcast and Sony are set to open a retail store this week at the cable company's downtown Philadelphia headquarters that will show off "wideband" Internet service, tru2way-enabled HDTVs and other products and services.

The Sony Style Comcast Labs store, scheduled to open in the lower-level concourse of Comcast Center building on March 17, will encompass more than 3,400 square feet, the AP reported.

Comcast will show demos of 100-Mbps broadband service, which the cable operator plans to launch commercially by the end of the year, according to the AP.

Sony will show HDTVs that use CableLabs' tru2way specification running Comcast's interactive program guide. The store also will sell other Sony products, including PlayStations, laptop PCs, cameras and camcorders.

"This is another great example of innovation and consumer technology being showcased in Philadelphia by Comcast. Comcast has attracted great partners like Sony that continue to benefit our citizens with cool products," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said in a statement.

Sony has more than 40 U.S. retail stores, called Sony Style, and Comcast sells its services in about 5,000 retail stores operated by Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target and others, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Comcast and Sony, which along with Lionsgate are partners in online and on-demand FearNet, may decide to open other stores if the initial location performs well, according to the AP.
