By Kent Gibbons -- Multichannel News, 3/16/2009 9:16:23 AM

Sci Fi Channel will rebrand itself Syfy on air and online starting July 7 in an effort to expand its scope and own its trademark.

Syfy logoThe channel, coming off its most-watched year out of 16, said in a release “the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider and more diverse range of imagination-based entertainment including fantasy, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure, as well as science fiction.  It also positions the brand for future growth by creating an ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and non-linear digital platforms, new international channels and extend into new business ventures.”

Sci Fi Channel president Dave Howe said in the release: "While continuing to embrace our legacy and our core audience, we needed to cultivate a distinct point of view with a name that we could own that invites more people in and reflects our broader range of programming."

“Imagine Greater” will be the new brand message and tagline. The Web site Scifi.com will become Scyfy.com. An aggressive trade marketing will kick off this spring. The New York Times reported today Sci Fi’s new name came from an internal team working with Landor Associates, part of WPP.

Sci Fi Channel is scheduled to discuss new programming plans at an upfront presentation in New York tonight. Friday night, the channel will air the season finale of hit Battlestar Galactica, a show that will be the subject of a panel discussion at the United Nations on Tuesday.

A new scripted drama, Warehouse 13, is scheduled to debut on July 7, along with the return of hit series Eureka.
