Costas On MLB Network's Call For New Yankee Stadium Opener

Rookie Service's First Regular-Season Game: Brewers-Giants April 9

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 3/25/2009 6:23:46 PM

Bob Costas will be in The House that George Steinbrenner Built when MLB Network covers the first game at the new Yankee Stadium on April 16.

Costas -- in his first baseball booth play-by-play duties since Oct. 17, 2000 when the Bronx Bombers closed out Lou Piniella's Seattle Mariners in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series -- will be joined in the booth by Jim Kaat and Harold Reynolds. The game is set for 1 p.m.
That telecast will mark MLB Network's second regular-season contest as the service throws out its first pitch on April 9 at 7 p.m. with Matt Vasgersian and Joe Magrane calling the game between the Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants.
Costas will pick up the mic again on May 7 with former New York Met Al Leiter as the Amazins in their new home at Citi Field take on their NL East rival and defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies at 7 p.m.
All told, MLB Network unveiled the lineup for its first eight regular-season games. April 16 will actually mark a doubleheader, with the Toronto Blue Jays visiting the Minnesota Twins at 8 p.m. Victor Rojas and Dan Plesac have the call). On April 23, the Los Angeles Dodgers engage the Astros in Houston, with Vasgersian and Magrane. A week later, it's a rematch of the 2008 ALCS with the Boston Red Sox taking on the Tampa Bay Rays, with Rojas and Magrane scheduled in the booth.
The rookie network also has the Baltimore Orioles-Kansas City Royals and Chicago Cubs-St. Louis Cardinals on May 14 and May 21, respectively. It has yet to make talent assignments.
