Cable Show 2009: Cox Debuts DOCSIS 3.0 Service In Louisiana
MSO Intros 50-Mbps Download Service in Lafayette Parish

Cox Communications announced that its "Ultimate Internet" package -- offering download speeds up to 50 Mbps -- is now available in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana.
The cable operator, the second major U.S. MSO after Comcast to launch DOCSIS 3.0-based high-speed service, said it plans to offer Ultimate Internet in several more markets by the end of 2009, and more than two-thirds of its footprint in 2010.
Cox is using Cisco Systems' DOCSIS 3.0 cable-modem termination system, as well as Cisco's DPC3000 cable modem. The service uses cable's next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 technology to bond multiple channels together.
The standard pricing for Ultimate Internet, with 50 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up, is $139.99 per month. However, prices are set locally, which means certain systems may offer lower promotional rates.
In Lafayette Parish, the service is rolling out initially at $89.99 per month for residential customers. The operator also is offering the 50/5 service this week to business customers in Lafayette Parish.
"Cox was one of the first ISPs in the country to begin offering customers a choice among speeds with our tiers of Internet service," Seth Hogan, Cox's vice president of data product management said in a statement. "We're excited to add our new Ultimate Internet package to meet our most avid Internet users' need for speed."
Comcast has taken the industry lead on DOCSIS 3.0 deployments, currently offering ultra-fast services to more than 15 million homes and businesses. The MSO expects to bring "wideband" to more than 30 million premises, representing more than 65% of its footprint.
