Cable Show 2009: Time Warner, Cox To Launch Cisco Whole-Home DVR

Cisco Systems, in debuting its Explorer multiroom DVRs at the Cable Show '09, said Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks plan to offer the set-tops in select systems later this year.

Cisco 8642 HDCThe Explorer 8600HDC DVR set-top series allow recorded shows or user-generated video content to be shared across multiple set-tops in the home.

Time Warner Cable, for one, also is working with Motorola to develop a tru2way-based multiroom DVR.

Cisco's Explorer 8600s features dual tuners with hard disk drive storage ranging from 160 to 500 Gigabytes. The boxes also support tru2way, 1-GHz tuning, an MPEG-4 (H.264) codec and optional Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) support.

"Our next-generation set-top box platform is truly an extension of ‘medianet,' and represents the foundation for innovative new multimedia services as delivered by service providers in the home," Tony Bates, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco's Service Provider Group, said in a statement.

In addition to tru2way and MoCA, Cisco's new set-top portfolio also support DLNA and DTCP-IP media-sharing standards.

Cisco Systems is debuting whole-home Explorer DVRs at the Cable Show '09, and announced that Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks plan to multiroom DVR set-tops in select systems later this year.
