Iger, Streaming And Life on the Edge
(RE: “Iger to Cable: Show Me the Online Model,” Multichannel.com, April 2): “In his insistence on authentication, [The Walt Disney Co. chairman Robert] Iger is pretty much throwing down the gauntlet to the industry to open up their networks to intelligent edge devices. But this will not happen; the engineering departments of the large MSOs are committed to maintaining their existing closed networks, and with them the monopoly of Motorola and SA. Sure, business-unit managers may covet the cool applications possible in an open world. But the people who run the engineering groups upon which they depend will fight to the death to keep the status quo. We all have our war stories about that one!”

Go Ahead, Make My Day
(RE: “Univision, Dish Retransmission Dispute Threatens Carriage,” Multichannel.com, March 30) “Go for it, Univision. Fischer Communications tried to double their prices with Dish Network for the local ABC affiliate in our market (Washington State). After a few weeks, I forgot about the ABC shows and just watched others. Now, I wouldn’t watch ABC if Dish showed them again. Fischer Communications, Univision needs to understand there’s a recession, and they need to lower costs — not increase them.”

Online TV Is Still No Substitute
(RE: Cable’s Bad Web Habits, Multichannel.com, March 29) “Hello Bit Torrent. The only way 'authentication’ would work is if the Internet-TV option was on par with regular TV. That means all shows available online at their original air date and time, and in acceptable quality. If they continue to offer the same service, but require people to pay a cable subscription in a round-a-bout way, we’ll just continue to pirate content. Once they learn that we are ultimately in control, they will be successful. It’s just an ego game.”
Allen Stanwyk, Student, Omaha, Neb.
