MTVN Deal Lets Netflix Stream 300-Plus Shows Online

Agreement Brings 'South Park,' Nickelodeon Hits To Internet TV Service

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 4/6/2009 6:17:32 AM

Netflix subscribers will have instant access to episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and the first nine seasons of South Park -- streamed over the Internet to their PCs or TVs -- under a pact with MTV Networks.

The deal, covering more than 300 episodes of past seasons from MTVN properties, was announced Monday by Netflix and Viacom's MTVN and South Park Digital Studios LLC, the joint venture between Comedy Central and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Terms weren't disclosed.

southparkNetflix currently distributes a range of MTVN properties on DVD and obtained its first digital license from the programmer last year through an agreement that allowed Netflix to stream movies, documentaries and original programming from MTVN's Logo network for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender audiences.

Netflix -- which now bills itself as "the world's largest online movie rental service" -- offers more than 12,000 titles available for streaming over the Internet for viewing on PC, or on television using a Netflix-enabled device from partners that include TiVo, Microsoft Xbox 360, Roku and LG Electronics.

Content covered under MTVN's new pact with Netflix include the first nine seasons of South Park (139 episodes total) plus selections from Nickelodeon, including: Blues Clues (Seasons 1 and 2), Dora the Explorer (Seasons 1 and 2), iCarly (Seasons 1 and 2), True Jackson, VP (Season 1) and SpongeBob SquarePants (Season 3).

"We want our content to be available to our diverse audiences wherever and whenever they're spending time, and Netflix is a platform that continues to grow in popularity with kids, young adults and parents alike," Greg Clayman, MTVN's executive vice president of digital distribution and business development, said in a statement.

"Netflix shares our commitment to consumer focus, and we're thrilled to expand our partnership by making Cartman, True Jackson, SpongeBob and so many of our iconic characters and shows available to stream at Netflix," Clayman added.
