Showtime To Strike Web With MMA Live Event

$24.95 Card Provides Users With Five Camera Angles, Facebook Application

Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 4/8/2009 11:23:36 AM

Showtime will give mixed martial arts fans the opportunity to watch the pay service's April 11 Frank Shamrock-Nick Diaz live MMA event on the Web as part of a fee-based online offering.

Through a collaboration with technology companies BitGravity, Inc. and Episodic, Inc., Showtime will stream its on-air feed of the event live via its Strikeforce: All Access Web site, beginning at 10 p.m., according to the network.

The $24.95 online offering will give users the ability to choose between five live cameras surrounding the MMA cage - including Showtime's live audio feed and in-ring sounds from each camera, as well as full pause and rewind capabilities.

A live Facebook connect application on the site will also allow fans to make predictions, comment on live fights and discuss outcomes.

The event is the first MMA event for Showtime since reaching a multi-year agreement with MMA event producer Strikeforce in February to create a series of live events for the network.

Last October, Showtime and MMA company Elite XC shut down operations after two years of producing regular events for distribution on the premium channel as well as broadcast network CBS and pay-per-view.

"By and large, the core fight fans watching MMA on Showtime are among the most technologically savvy of all viewers," said Showtime senior vice president and general manager of sports and event programming Ken Hershman in a statement. "We are proud to offer this enhanced experience to an audience that will embrace the opportunity to control the content and interact with one another during the live show. Strikeforce: All Access puts you in the driver seat."
