SMC Networks has begun shipping a wireless DOCSIS 2.0 cable-modem gateway that supports the next-generation wireless networking standard - 802.11n - that allows for data transfers of up to 300 Mbps.
The SMC8014WN-RES incorporates a DOCSIS 2.0-compliant cable modem, dual-band draft 802.11n wireless access point, four-port Ethernet router and firewall. While the unit's wireless access point supports up to 300-Mbps transfers, the CableLabs DOCSIS 2.0 specification allows for a maximum downstream speed of about 38 Mbps.
The dual-band 2.4- and 5-GHz wireless radios use the 802.11n to provide higher throughput and greater range while maintaining compatibility with legacy devices based on the 802.11b/g technology, according to SMC.
