CableLabs Certifies First PacketCable 2.0 Embedded Devices

11 Other Devices for DOCSIS 2.0 and 3.0 Also OK'd in Cert Wave 65

CableLabs has certified the first equipment for PacketCable 2.0, a set of specifications that enables real-time applications such as voice and multimedia over DOCSIS networks.

The devices -- embedded digital voice adapters from Ubee Interactive (formerly called Ambit Microsystems) and Thomson -- were OK'd in CableLabs' recently completed Certification Wave 65.

The PacketCable 2.0 core service architecture is based on common standards technologies such as the IP Multimedia System (IMS) and the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).

"This success marks a milestone for our industry's efforts to offer consumers new services," Comcast chief technology office Tony Werner said in a statement. "I expect that we will see more advances in multimedia offerings as our industry continues to deliver more choice and convenience to our customers."

In addition to the two EDVAs, Ubee and Thomson also each achieved certifications for PacketCable 1.5 embedded multimedia terminal adapters that implement DOCSIS 3.0.

CableLabs also certified seven DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems -- two from Ambit, two from Cisco Systems, and one each from Netgear, SMC and Thomson -- as well as DOCSIS 2.0 cable modems from Cisco and Motorola.
