John Madden's retirement from broadcasting has left a hole in the NFL Network broadcast booth.
With Cris Collinsworth replacing the legendary analyst alongside Al Michaels on NBC's Sunday Night Football, the three-time 2008 nominee is relinquishing that role on NFL Network's primetime slate, after three seasons.
An NFL Network spokesman said the "dartboard is open. We'll be looking at everybody" in searching for a teammate to play-by-play man Bob Papa. The service's eight-game primetime slate kicks off with the Nov. 12 game featuring San Francisco and head coach Mike Singletary, returning to meet his old club the Chicago Bears and their new quarterback Jay Cutler.
In a statement, NFL Network president and CEO Steve Bornstein thanked Collinsworth for his work at the service: "Cris is the best analyst currently working in sports and he has been a wonderful part of NFL Network's team for the past three years," he said. "We are happy for him that he has been chosen to be the new analyst on Sunday Night Football. We appreciate everything he did for our Thursday Night Football broadcasts and wish him the best in his new role at NBC."
Collinsworth's new job at NBC should have not impact on his work on Showtime's Inside The NFL, which may benefit from the added exposure the analyst will gain on SNF.
Collinsworth received Emmy nominations for his work as outstanding sports personality-sports event analyst for his NFL Network on the Monday night after the NFL Draft, as well as game work on the pro football league's in-house service and NBC last season.
