Harmonic Debuts Scopus-Based Receiver

ProView 7000 Integrated Receiver and Stream Processing Platform

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 4/17/2009 3:09:15 PM

Harmonic is rolling out its first product based on the Scopus Video Networks' integrated receiver/decoder platform, the ProView 7000.

The ProView 7000 combines a video receiver, DVB descrambler, multiformat decoder and MPEG stream processor in a single rack unit. Harmonic completed the acquisition of Scopus, a deal worth $50 million, in March.

"We are seeing positive results from the addition of Scopus Video Networks' technologies to Harmonic's family of solutions, as evidenced by the introduction of the ProView 7000," Nimrod Ben-Natan, Harmonic vice president of product marketing, solutions and strategy, said in a statement. "With its flexibility and multifunctional capabilities, this platform fits right in with Harmonic's philosophy of helping operators maximize their return on investment with IP-based solutions from satellite reception all the way to end-user delivery."

On the cable front, the ProView 7000 can allow cable operators to reduce operating expenses by descrambling multiple programs within a single unit, Harmonic said.

Other applications Harmonic is positioning the ProView 7000 as enabling include video newsgathering; re-encoding applications for DBS and IPTV network operators to distribute MPEG-2 content; and all-IP headends, in which the ProView 7000 acts as a receiver to descramble and transmit DVB-S2 satellite signals to the Harmonic Flex decoder blade for IP video distribution.

Harmonic plans to show off the ProView 7000 at the NAB 2009 Show in Las Vegas next week.
