Cisco Systems announced Friday that MTV Networks has purchased a variety of its video-encoding and communications products, including MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) and transcoding for more efficient satellite bandwidth utilization.

MTVN will use Cisco's MPEG-4 AVC high-definition encoding/transcoding platform to deliver 16 HD channels, eight channels each for U.S. East Coast and West Coast feeds.

In addition, Viacom unit is using the Cisco TelePresence videoconferencing solution and IP telephony systems.

"For a media organization as large as MTV Networks, it is imperative to constantly seek innovative ways to maximize your content portfolio," Viacom chief information officer Joe Simon said in a statement. "By teaming with Cisco, we have been able to efficiently expand the availability of HD programming for our flagship channels, which are in high demand by our viewers."
