ZillionTV Locks Down Content With Verimatrix

TV-Over-Broadband Startup Picks Encryption and Authentication Platform

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 4/20/2009 10:36:29 AM

ZillionTV, a video-over-broadband startup backed by major Hollywood studios, has deployed Verimatrix's content-security system for IPTV to secure its on-demand library of content.

ZillionTV, which expects to launch its service in the fourth quarter, plans to offer more than 15,000 movies and TV shows free to consumers.

The startup's investors include Disney-ABC Domestic Television, 20th Century Fox Television, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros., which are licensing content to the venture.

ZillionTV users will have the option of watching targeted and addressable ad-supported content for free, or rent or purchase the videos, depending on the options offered by each content owner tied to each specific program.

"Content security is an essential, foundational element of the ZillionTV Service, as our content partners must be assured that their assets are well protected," ZillionTV chief technology officer Mike Catalano said in a statement. Verimatrix's system "offers the flexibility to adapt to our device architecture and enables a distributed delivery infrastructure, while also providing a transparent viewing experience for consumers."

Other key suppliers to ZillionTV include Hillcrest Labs, which develops motion-sensitive remote control technology; VOD vendor Edgeware; and set-top chip manufacturer Sigma Designs.
