IFC Plans ‘Media' Effort

Multiplatform Initiative Sheds Light On Media's Societal Role

George Vernadakis -- Multichannel News, 5/1/2009 12:38:16 PM

IFC tv has unveiled its pro-social initiative "Make Media Matter" which raises awareness about the role media plays in society. The multiplatform campaign, which premieres this spring, will bring together information and expertise from journalists, public officials, think-tanks, non-profits and universities.
Make Media Matter is produced by IFC tv in partnership with The Aspen Institute of Communications and Society Program, the National Association for Media Literacy Education, and the School of Communication at Hofstra University.
The campaign will include a series of Town Hall meetings, a national media literacy awards program and an interactive media literacy Web site, www.ifc.com/makemediamatter.
"With news and commentary coming at us from all angles, it is more important than ever for all of us to be able to filter news coverage with a critical eye," said Evan Shapiro, president of IFC tv and Sundance Channel.
