Actiontec Sips MoCA

Ethernet-over-Coax Adapters Designed to Bring Broadband to Home Theaters

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 5/4/2009 3:18:17 PM

Actiontec Electronics launched a Ethernet-over-coaxial-cable network adapters designed to extend broadband connections to home-theater systems.

The adapter complies with the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) standard and uses semiconductors from Entropic Communications, one of MoCA's founders.

Actiontec said the MoCA-based adapter, designed for home-theater installation professionals, provides a faster and less expensive way to bring Internet connectivity to home theaters instead of stringing new cabling or relying on a wireless adapters.

"Since most homes are already wired for cable or satellite television, an Ethernet-to-coax network adapter is the logical choice to deliver a fast and reliable connection throughout the home, regardless if the broadband connection is cable, DSL or fiber," said Mike Ehlenberger, Actiontec vice president of channel sales.

The company also is introducing a home-networking adapter based on the HomePNA Alliance standard. That version uses chips from CopperGate Communications.

Both products will be available through authorized Actiontec distributors.

Actiontec, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., sells IPTV broadband home gateways, DSL modems and routers, and fiber-optic routers for Verizon's FiOS Internet service.
