Cable Honors Educators as 'Leaders in Learning'

Cable in The Classroom Singles Out Visionary Approaches

by Staff -- Multichannel News, 5/6/2009 4:58:14 PM

The newest winners of Cable's Leaders in Learning Award include individuals involved in a Midwest small town's student film festival, a New Orleans area charter school and an organic gardening program that's also a cable-broadcast reality show.

Cable in the Classroom, the cable industry's national education foundation, honors the winners chosen from 47 finalist applications submitted from across the country. Applicants consisted of educators, school administrators, college faculty, volunteers and community leaders.

"For 20 years, Cable in the Classroom has encouraged educators to use technology as a tool for learning, allowing students to grow and develop as responsible and productive citizens, prepared to compete and thrive in the global economy," Frank Gallagher, director of education and media literacy at Cable in the Classroom, said in a release. "This year's Cable's Leaders in Learning Award winners have implemented creative and technology-rich programs that we are proud to recognize and honor."

Among the 2009 honorees:

Joe Hall is founder and president of The Ghetto Film School in the Bronx, an organization that provides young people with the technology, resources, relationships and training they need to make outstanding film, video and multimedia projects. Founded in 2000, The Ghetto Film School (GFS) connects talented young people to artistic, educational and career opportunities in the world of film and video. Since its founding, more than 400 students have participated in GFS programs and workshops, coming from all areas of New York City to the South Bronx training facilities for hands-on production and cinema studies courses.

Kristy Philippi is founder and principal of the Taylor Academy in the Jefferson Parish School System for the STEM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school founded in 2004. Through business relationships and a community desire to challenge a diverse group of students, the school now thrives academically.

Tony Alteparmakian is a classroom teacher at Foothill High School who uses an innovative method of documenting classroom lectures. He uses audio and visual devices that record his pen strokes and speech as a video. He then adds class notes, pictures and videos and uploads all of it to YouTube for students to access at their convenience.

The national Cable's Leaders in Learning Award honorees will each receive a $3,000 prize and an expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they will be honored at an awards ceremony and luncheon on June 10th hosted by Food Network Chef Alton Brown.
