Arris Debuts Ethernet-Over-Optical Solution For Cable

FTTMax Solution Works With Vendor's CHP Max 5000 Headend

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 5/21/2009 1:21:18 PM

Arris is shipping a platform designed to let cable operators offer Ethernet-based data services over a fiber-to-the-premises network.

The FTTMax Ethernet Passive Optical Networking solution is comprised of an optical line terminal and optical network unit to let MSOs add mixed-use services without changing their existing back-office operations.

Operators using the Arris CHP Max 5000 headend chassis can add EPON to their service offerings by adding an FTTMax EPON OLT in the headend and an ONU at the customer premises.

The FTTMax OLT media converter, which provides 20 ports in a two rack units, uses DOCSIS back-office systems and existing routers and switches. Up to 1,280 customers can be served from one OLT.

With the EPON solution "MSOs can target business services quickly, cost effectively, easily and incrementally, while conserving fiber -- one of their most valuable assets," John Caezza, president of Arris's Access and Transport group, said in a statement. "The cable industry has always found innovative methods of optimizing its network and EPON-based solutions add an elegant option as they tap into new business service revenue streams while keeping pace with their residential customers' increasing information and entertainment needs."
