Upfronts 2009: Specials Abound On Discovery En Espanol
Spanish-Language Net Fortifies Returning Series Lineup With New Shows

Discovery en Espanol, looking to continue its momentum with adults 18 to 49, will bring a diverse lot of specials and series, new and returning alike, to TV and other screens during the 2009-10 season.
During its upfront presentations to advertisers this spring, the network, which claims to be the second-highest-rated Spanish-language cable network with the aforementioned group, has presented specials and series across all its key genres: adrenaline, ingenuity, wild Discovery, real life Drama, living, our world and green.
"Discovery en Español continues to deliver the most relevant and highest-quality entertainment available to U.S. Hispanic audiences," said Luis Silberwasser, senior vice president and general manager of Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group, in a statement. "By elevating the standard for Spanish-language television, we not only stay true to our core principles but also to a proven content strategy that has consistently delivered strong ratings for our network".
Among the returning series, which originate on other networks within Discovery Communications' stable of services are Storm Chasers, I Shouldn't Be Alive, Man vs. Wild, Deadliest Catch and Whale Wars. To that list, the service will add Animal Planet's hit River Monsters.
Additionally, Discovery en Espanol is planning a new series spin-off of the acclaimed Maras special that debuted in 2007, while Science of the Movies is a new magazine show that looks at the science behind the celluloid and digital.
Also on tap: a six-hour docudrama series Crimes That Shook Latin America, a scope of serial killers like Mexico's Juana Barraza and Brazil's Franciso das Chagas Rodrigues; and Bio Recon, in which venom expert Donald Schultz looks at some of the most dangerous jobs on the planet, including harvesting fangs from South Africa's black mamba, or collecting new species of deadly jelly fish off the coast of Papua, New Guinea.
Discovery en Espanol also has a number of specials lined up, notably: South Pacific, a six-part series on extraordinary wildlife and cultures of that ocean; Yellowstone, Tales from the Wild, a three-part film following the lives of three of the park's icons, grey wolf, grizzly bear and buffalo/antelope herds, interacting over the course of the seasons; and Life, a look at some of the planet's most spectacular species as told by the Emmy Award-winning team behind Planet Earth.
Other specials on tap: Werewolves, which dares to imagine that these creatures are really part of our world, and not a myth; Discovery Atlas 2010, an examination of such notable places as the Great Rift Valley, the Himalayas, the Ganges and Patagonia; and Last Days of the Dinosaur, an HD recreation of how climatic changes ended the big fellas' rule.
