Fifth-Season Premiere of Jon & Kate Sets TLC Viewer Record

Season Opener Averages 9.8 Million Watchers

Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 5/26/2009 3:07:39 PM

Jon & Kate Plus 8 equals 10 -- as in 10 Gosselins and nearly 10 million viewers who tuned in TLC for the series' much-ballyhooed Memorial Day fifth-season premiere.

The May 25 installment, which featured Jon and Kate Gosselin and their eight children for the first time since the couple's much-publicized marital struggles, averaged a network-best 9.8 million viewers, more than double the series' previous high of 4.6 million viewers garnered by its March 23 season-four finale.

Last night's episode, which surpassed an October 2003 installment of Trading Spaces that scored with 9 million viewers and 7.05 million households to becomeTLC's most-watched show, also set network ratings records among  women 18 to 34 (9.1 rating), men 18 to 34 (3.6 rating) and persons 18 to 34 (6.3 rating).

In the episode, which revolved around the fifth birthday party for the couple's sextuplets, both Jon and Kate separately addressed the controversies surrounding their marriage, with both continuing to deny reported extramarital affairs. The installment concluded with both sitting side-by-side on the sofa, but not talking to each other.
