History's special about a new finding of small fossil that could prove to be a key evolutionary link to human development played big for the network on Monday night.
The Link, centering on 47 million-year-old fossil called Ida, averaged 2 million viewers in its two-hour May 25 debut, according to Nielsen Media Research data. That audience represented a 67% gain over History's primetime average, according to network officials. Among the viewers: some 904,000 watchers aged 25 to 54 and 756,000 among the persons 18 to 49. Together with the University of Oslo and the Senckenberg Research Institute, History presented findings about The Link at the American Museum of Natural History on May 19. The two-hour special chronicled the discovery and study of the fossil, which is 20 times older than most findings that explain human evolution. Ida is apparently a transitional species showing characteristics from the very primitive non-human evolutionary line of prosimians, such as lemurs, but is more related to the human evolutionary line of anthropoids, such as monkeys, apes and humans.
