Brokaw Begins USA Network's Highway 50 Journey In Maryland Crabbing Town

'Dispatches From Road' Segments Part Of Upcoming Documentary

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 5/27/2009 2:15:19 PM

Tom Brokaw will make the first stop on his journey across America in a crabbing town in Maryland.

The short segment, airing May 27 at 7 p.m. (ET) on USA Network is the initial entry in "Dispatches From The Road," updates from the journalist's upcoming documentary, Brokaw Presents: American Character Along Highway 50. That film, scheduled to debut on the "characters" network in January, reflects his meetings with citizens on his Highway 50 road trip, which was inspired by a series of photographs in USA Network's book American Character: A Photographic Journey, to which he wrote the foreword.
Other shorts from the initiative, eight in total, will manifest on NBC Nightly News and the Today Show and other NBCU television and online properties.
In the first installment, Brokaw' meets risk-taker Amanda Bramble, an entrepreneur who has realized her personal American dream of opening a seafood restaurant in the sleepy fishing town of Cambridge, Maryland near Chesapeake Bay.
Bramble shares the plight of local fisherman forced to leave the waters to support their families and recounts the difficult personal challenges created by the recession. Denied financing from the banks, Bramble's passion compelled nine investors from the community to pool their cash and sweat equity to make her culinary dream of Jimmie & Sook's a restaurant reality.
