BendBroadband Plans Free Wi-Fi Extension

Oregon-Based Provider Also to Offer Paid Service for Non Subscribers

by Kent Gibbons -- Multichannel News, 6/9/2009 12:57:18 PM EDT

BendBroadband said it plans to launch Wi-Fi service this summer that will provide free Internet access to BendBroadband high-speed Internet customers at popular locations in its Central Oregon service territory.

The service will offer download speeds up to 2 megabits per second, with upload speeds of 1Mbps, in major public parks, the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, the Les Schwab Amphitheater and other locations in Bend, Redmond and Sisters.

When an Internet browser is activated within a Wi-Fi hot spot, a BendBroadband Web page will open with easy log-in instructions. Users will need Wi-Fi enabled laptop computers or other devices. Visitors to Central Oregon can access the network for $5.95 per day or $19.95 per week.

"In terms of further expansion of the network, Central Oregonians can cast their vote for additional Wi-Fi locations at BendBroadband's Web site. A detailed map of the BendBroadband Wi-Fi coverage areas is also located there.

Among cable operators, the best known Wi-Fi service rollout thus far is on the East Coast, by New York-based Cablevision Systems.
