Cablevision WiFi Usage Accelerates

Service Tapped 2 Million Times, Just Two Months After Crossing 1 Million Milestone

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 6/11/2009 3:11:08 PM

Cablevision Systems Corp.'s online customers have accessed the Internet more than 2 million times for free over its Optimum WiFi service since it bowed last September.

The milestone for Optimum WiFi network comes just a couple of months after customers had accessed the service 1 million times in early April.

The network, which launched in Nassau County in September 2008, is now available across Cablevision's Long Island, Connecticut, Westchester/Dutchess and New Jersey service areas. The operator expects to complete deployment of its $300 million project to bring wireless access to broadband customers throughout its entire New York metropolitan service area by early next 2010 at no additional costs to its customers.

Currently, Cablevision has already made thousands of WiFi access points available in downtown areas, parks, commuter rail platforms, station parking lots and other outdoor locales.
Cablevision said it proffers downstream speeds of up to 3 megabits-per-second, which makes Optimum WiFi more than twice as fast as many cell phone data plans that can cost upward $100 per month.
"We are building our WiFi network as a value-added extension of our residential and business-based Internet products, so it's extremely gratifying to know that our Optimum Online customers have already accessed the Internet more than two million times over Optimum WiFi, and are averaging more than one million free minutes online per day," said Cablevision senior vice president of wireless product development Kevin Curran in a statement. "Offering fast, free and convenient Internet access, Optimum WiFi has exploded in popularity, as more of our customers are finding and using the network every day."
