CNN Sets Cable News Ratings Pace With Jackson Coverage

Averages 3.89 Million Primetime Watchers On Night King Of Pop Passed

CNN led the cable news sector in viewership on the night entertainer Michael Jackson and actress Farrah Fawcett passed.

Averaging nearly 3.89 million viewers in primetime on June 25 CNN  had1.03 million viewers more than Fox News Channel's 2.86 million average. MSNBC was a distant third with 1.47 million watchers, according to Nielsen Media Research data.
Among adults 25 to 54, the so-called news demo, CNN also set the primetime pace with 1.79 million watchers, versus 1.19 for Fox News and 684,000 for MSNBC.
The numbers were similar from the 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. time slot, as CNN averaged 3.04 million 2+ watchers, including 1.46 million adults 25 to 54. For its part, Fox News notched 2.09 million viewers, and 960,000 in the aforementioned news demo. MSNBC scored a 1.06 million viewer average over the six-hour span, with 505,000 adults 25 to 54.
Gauged from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., CNN counted 3.16 million on average for coverage centering on Jackson's death from cardiac arrest, compared with 2.34 million and 1.14 million for Fox News and MSNBC, respectively. On the demo side, Nielsen scored it 1.48 million for CNN, 1.03 million for Fox News and 536,000 for MSNBC during that eight-hour period.
