Brazil-U.S. Match Nets U.S. Men's Team' Largest Non-World Cup Audience

3.95 Million Tune In ESPN's Coverage Of Confederations Cup Final

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 6/30/2009 11:44:11 PM

ESPN's coverage of the 2009 Confederations Cup final Sunday was the most-watched non-FIFA World Cup match showcasing the U.S. men's national team in network history.

The June 28 contest, in which the U.S. surrendered a two-goal halftime lead to Brazil, which stormed back to win its third Confederations Cup crown, 3-2, averaged just under 3.95 million watchers, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

The telecast, which kicked off at 2 p.m. (ET), earned a 2.6 rating and was seen in 2.56 million homes.

The match delivered the third-largest audience for the U.S. men's side, trailing its World Cup contests against Germany on June 21, 2002 and Colombia on June 22, 1994, which drew 5.34 million and 4.81 million viewers, respectively.
