Entropic Communications, a provider of silicon and software to provide home networking over coaxial cabling, announced it has hired Tom Lookabaugh as its chief technology officer.
Prior to Entropic, Lookabaugh was CEO at PolyCipher, a joint venture owned by Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications that had been developing a downloadable conditional access system, or DCAS, for the U.S. cable industry. The owners of PolyCipher shut down the venture's office as of the end of June and CableLabs has taken over the management of the DCAS project.
"Tom has the experience and expertise to guide Entropic in delivering our silicon solutions today, and into the future," Entropic president and CEO Patrick Henry said, in a statement. "His unique mix as technology visionary, innovator, evangelist, architect and educator will bring the right perspective as we continue to lead the charge toward ubiquitous home entertainment connectivity."
Entropic's previous CTO, company co-founder Itzhak Gurantz, will move into an individual contributor role and will focus on long-term technology initiatives for the company.
Prior to PolyCipher, Lookabaugh was a faculty director in the University of Colorado's Computer Science Department, responsible for the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program. He also served as president of Harmonic's Convergent Systems division and president of the DiviCom division of C-Cube Microsystems.
