NASCAR Fuels TNT Primetime Ratings Triumph

Coke Zero 400 Coverage Earns 'Drama' Network Checkered Flag; Disney, USA Follow

R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 7/8/2009 1:29:25 PM

TNT drove its live NASCAR racing coverage to the top of the weekly cable network primetime ratings heap last week.

Bolstered by more than 10 million combined viewers who tuned into the network's July 4 live race and post race coverage of the NASCAR Coke Zero 400 race from Daytona International Speedway, TNT averaged 2.7 million viewers to finish as the most-watched basic cable network in primetime from June 29 to July 5, according to a Disney-ABC Television Group analysis of Nielsen Media Research.

Disney Channel finished second for the week, averaging 2.5 million viewers, while USA -- which saw its weekly ratings winning streak broken at four -- finish third with an average of 2.4 million viewers.

Fox News Channel (1.8 million viewers) Nick-at Nite (1.7 million) TBS (1.5 million), FX (1.39 million) CNN (1.32 million) Food Network (1.22 million) and Discovery Channel (1.21 million) rounded out the top 10.

Disney's July 5 Hannah Montana original episode drew a cable best 6.9 million viewers, followed by a June 29 episode of TNT's The Closer (6.2 million) and USA's ratings staple WWE Monday Night Raw franchise (6.2 million for the 10 p.m. hour and 5.6 million for the 9 p.m. hour.)

On a 24-hour basis, Nickelodeon topped the list, averaging 2.2 million viewers, followed by Disney Channel (1.9 million); Nick At Nite (1.6 million); TNT (1.3 million); and USA Network (1.2 million).
