Comcast Throws Out WiMax Pitch In Atlanta

Operator Expects to Launch High-Speed 2go in Chicago, Philadelphia Later in 2009

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 7/28/2009 3:48:59 PM

Comcast is now marketing high-speed wireless Internet service in Atlanta, offered through Clearwire, and is readying deployments in additional markets including Chicago and Philadelphia later this year.

The operator is selling the wireless service bundled with its wireline cable-modem service. Comcast debuted WiMax-based service in Portland, Ore., in late June.

Comcast High-Speed 2go is provided on a wholesale basis through Clearwire, which officially launched WiMax service in Atlanta last month

Comcast last year took a $1.05 billion stake in Clearwire, which is majority-owned by Sprint with additional investments from Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Intel and Google.

Comcast is selling two different data cards and service plans: the "Metro" service uses a WiMax-only data card from Chinese manufacturer ZTE; while the Nationwide plan includes a 4G/3G combo card from Franklin Wireless to provide 4G service in Clearwire's WiMax markets where it's available plus access to Sprint's national 3G network elsewhere.

The $49.99 Fast Pack Metro service includes Comcast's 12-Mbps home Internet service, a Wi-Fi router for mobility and extended coverage in the home, and 4G service that provides up to 6 Mbps average download speeds outside the home. For an additional $20 per month, customers can upgrade to the Nationwide plan.
