Discovery Upgrades Miami Facility For HD

Expands Omneon Media Servers Supporting Latin America, U.S. Hispanic Channels

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 7/28/2009 4:05:04 PM

Discovery Communications has expanded the Omneon media server systems at its Miami distribution facility as part of launching Discovery HD Theater across Latin America.

The programmer reconfigured the Miami facility's existing mirrored standard-definition ingest/playout system, based on Omneon's Spectrum platform, to create a mirrored SD playout system and a separate SD ingest system. Then Discovery added a mirrored HD playout system and upgraded the ingest system to accommodate both SD and HD content.

Discovery's Miami playout facility provides 12 channels for nearly 130 million cumulative subscribers in 34 countries and territories.

"We've worked with Spectrum systems in our Miami facility since 2003, and during this time, the modular design of Omneon server solutions has enabled a straightforward expansion strategy of our network distribution, including a calculated launch of HD services throughout the Latin American region," Discovery vice president of engineering Joe Walker said.

Networks distributed via Discovery's Miami facilities are: Discovery Channel, Discovery Kids, People + Arts, Animal Planet, Discovery Home & Health, Discovery Travel & Living, Discovery Civilization, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo, and Discovery HD Theater, as well as two U.S. Hispanic channels, Discovery en Español and Discovery Familia.
