Comcast Completes DOCSIS 3.0 Rollout In San Francisco

Launches 50-Mbps Downstream Internet Service in East Bay and North Bay

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 7/28/2009 5:16:26 PM

Comcast has upgraded San Francisco's East Bay and North Bay systems to DOCSIS 3.0, completing its rollout of "wideband" service in the market.

The company previously deployed wideband in the San Jose-Silicon Valley area, in San Francisco and on the Peninsula, in portions of the East Bay and in the Monterey-Salinas area earlier this year.

The operator last week said it had deployed "wideband" cable-modem service in nearly 50% of its footprint, serving almost 25 million homes and businesses.

Comcast offers two new residential tiers through DOCSIS 3.0: Extreme 50, offering up to 50 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 10 Mbps of upstream speed for $99.95 per month; and Ultra, offering 22/5 Mbps for $62.95 per month.

The Comcast services are available starting Tuesday to residential homes in 76 cities in the East Bay and North Bay areas around San Francisco, and will be available to businesses beginning Aug. 4.
