'Jon & Kate' Not Nearly As Great: Returning Episodes Average 4.1 Million Viewers

Aug. 3 Installments Off 61% From TLC's Record Performance On June 22

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 8/4/2009 11:31:03 PM

Jon and Kate Gosselin were back on TLC with fresh episodes of their reality series Monday night, but without many of their watchers.

The new Jon & Kate Plus 8 installments on Aug. 3, the first since the couple announced their split on the air in late June, averaged 4.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research data, with the 9 p.m. episode attracting 4 million and the one bowing at 9:30 p.m. garnering 4.2 million. The former posted a 3.1 household rating, with second weighing in with a 3.2.

That's a 61% drop from the June 22 installment, which drew series and network high 7.7 rating average and 10.6 million watchers, as the couple announced that they were separating after their troubled marriage became tabloid fodder.

Nevertheless, the Monday-night performances were huge for TLC. Jon & Kate Plus 8's 9:30 p.m. airing ranked at the No. 1 telecast for ad-supported cable for ratings and delivery among persons 18 to 49, persons 18 to 34, women 18 to 49 (1.9 million), women 18 to 34 (1.1 million); claimed second among women 25 to 54 (1.8 million); and was fourth with the adults 25-to-54 set (2.4 million), according to Nielsen.

In the 9 p.m. slot, TLC ranked second in ad-supported cable for ratings and delivery among persons 18 to 49 and 18 to 34 and women 18 to 34 (1.0 million); third with women 25 to 54 (1.7 million); and fifth with persons 25 to 54 (2.3 million).

The episodes also leavened as a lead-ins for TLC's Ultimate Cake Off at 10 p.m., which notched a 1.4 rating, and was watched by 1.9 million people.
