DirecTV struck a deal with Mark Cuban's Magnolia Pictures to offer the studio's drama The Burning Plain on pay-per-view beginning Aug. 21, ahead of its Sept. 16 U.S. theatrical release date.
The deal represents the first time DirecTV is offering a PPV movie prior to theatrical release. The film will be available for $9.99 in standard-definition format and $10.99 in 1080p HD format.
The Burning Plain stars Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger and was directed by Guillermo Arriaga, writer of 21 Grams and Babel.
"DirecTV customers have always enjoyed the convenience of ordering new release movies from the comfort of their home with the touch of a remote," DirecTV vice president of marketing Sarah Lyons said in a statement.
