TiVo Licenses Data From Rovi

Deal Lets TiVo Add TV, Movie and Music Data to DVRs and Services

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 8/6/2009 11:23:41 AM

TiVo has signed a multiyear agreement with Rovi (formerly Macrovision Solutions) that will let the company incorporate Rovi's TV, movie and music data into its digital video recorders and services for cable, satellite and broadcasting companies.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Rovi, through its acquisitions of All Media Guide in late 2007 and Muze Inc. last year, provides entertainment metadata including program and movie descriptions, rich-media content, celebrity biographies, original editorial content, cast and credits information, album reviews and other information.

TiVo has access to Rovi's metadata on more than 1 million TV series episodes since 1954, 400,000 movie titles and 13 million pop and classical music tracks.

"It is important for TiVo to be able to provide our subscribers and technology distributors worldwide a broad range of data and we are pleased that Rovi's data solutions gives us the ability to provide even more movies, music, and TV show information to them," TiVo general manager and vice president of international Joshua Danovitz said in a statement.

Rovi officially changed its named from Macrovision earlier this month.
